New report U.S. has dismal first-day infant mortality rate
The United States is one of the wealthiest, most technologically advanced nations in the world. Even so, there are many flaws in our system of health care.
According to a new report from Save the Children, an international organization dedicated to changing the lives of children in need, the most vulnerable members of our society are bearing a heavy share of the burden when it comes to substandard medical care. Thousands of American newborns never make it through their first day; rates of infant mortality in the U.S. were found to far outpace those of other industrialized nations.
American first-day deaths outnumber rest of industrialized world combined
According to the report, in the average year, approximately one million children around the world lose their lives on the first day they are born. In countries rich and poor, the day of birth stands out as the most dangerous in an infant’s young life.
In the United States, some 11,300 babies die on the day of their birth every year. Save the Children reports that out of the nations studied, the U.S. ranks 30th in terms of its first-day infant mortality rate. Singapore, Slovenia and Estonia are among the countries that outranked the U.S. – and while many countries have made improvements in infant care, the U.S. dropped five places from the 2012 Save the Children report.
The United States has 50 percent more first-day infant deaths than the 33 other industrialized nations included in the report combined. While the European Union taken as a whole has a million more births than the U.S. in the average year, it loses only half as many infants on their first day of life.
